South Korean pop star to star in Hollywood film (AFP)

SEOUL (AFP) - Singer and actor Rain, one of South Koreas biggest stars, will play a leading role in a Hollywood film for the first time in his rapidly blooming career, a US entertainment agency said Wednesday.

The 26-year-old, real name Jeong Ji-hoon, will star in "Ninja Assassin," an action flick directed by James McTeigue, the William Morris Agency (WMA) said.

"This is such a huge opportunity for me. It seems like a dream," Rain told journalists here.

Scheduled to begin shooting later this year, the movie will be jointly produced by Joel Silver and the Wachowski brothers. The Wachowskis directed the acclaimed Matrix series of films.

Rain made his Hollywood debut in Speed Racer, also produced by the Wachowski brothers, but only in a supporting role. The film is scheduled to hit screens in May.

Rain has come to personify the "Korean Wave" of pop music, films and TV dramas sweeping across Asia.

He was named one of the "100 Most Influential People" by Time magazine in 2006 and one of the "100 Most Beautiful People" last year by People magazine.

He recently signed a contract with WMA, a New York-based agency that represents entertainers such as troubled singer Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Russell Crowe.

"Were a business with a number of artists who are really international artists, and we look at Rain as the same," said John Mass, a WMA vice-chief.

"Hes not just popular in Korea or Asia, but hes popular throughout the world."
