New custody blow for Britney Spears after no-show (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Britney Spears latest attempt to regain visitation rights to her two sons was rejected on Wednesday after the troubled pop star failed to appear for a Los Angeles court hearing, officials said.

Spears, 26, arrived at Los Angeles Superior Court for a morning hearing in her custody dispute with ex-husband Kevin Federline but left abruptly without entering the court room, court spokesman Allan Parachini said.

"She told the deputies she wanted to leave the premises and did so," Parachini said. An existing court order revoking Spears visitation rights to her baby children remained in place, he added.

Spears sudden absence caught her legal team off guard, with lawyer Anne Kiley telling Court Commissioner Scott Gordon she was uncertain of her clients intentions. "I dont know if she will be here or not," Kiley said, before the court went into a closed session.

A further hearing has been scheduled for February 4 to discuss a motion by Spears lawyers to withdraw their representation.

Spears visitation rights were suspended after she was at the center of a hospital drama on January 3. Paramedics took her from her home on a stretcher after she refused to hand over her sons to Federline under a custody agreement.

Spears was taken to the Cedars Sinai Medical Center for mental evaluation before she discharged herself two days later.

The exact reasons for Spears admission to hospital have not been revealed although speculation has raged that the singer is suffering from a long-standing psychological illness.

Spears, one of the most successful pop stars of her generation, has been locked in the custody feud with Federline since the couple separated in 2006.

A judge limited the pop stars access to her children in October after she failed to submit to random drug testing as demanded at an earlier hearing where the court ruled Spears was a "habitual and continuous drug user."
