Music legend Ike Turner died from cocaine overdose: coroner (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Music legend Ike Turner, who was found dead at his home in California last month, died from an accidental cocaine overdose, authorities announced on Wednesday.

The San Diego County Medical Examiners Office said Turner, best remembered for his successful musical partnership and violent marriage to singer Tina Turner, had a history of heart ailments that contributed to his death.

Turner, 76, who is credited with writing what is often described as the first Rock and Roll record, 1951s "Rocket 88," was found dead at his home in San Marcos on December 12.

Turner battled drug and alcohol addictions throughout the 1980s which led to numerous brushes with the law and eventually resulted in a lengthy stint in jail on drug-related charges.

The musician was still behind bars and unable to attend his induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, which was accepted on his behalf by Tina.

Following his 1993 release from prison Turner began to rebuild his career, and won a Grammy in 2007 with blues album "Risin With the Blues."
