Los Angeles (E! Online) - Heath Ledger was remembered Saturday at a private memorial service in Los Angeles attended by his family and close friends.
The actors body left New York on Friday to begin the long journey back to Australia, where he is expected to be laid to rest in his hometown of Perth.
His parents and sister, Kate, were waiting in Los Angeles to meet the body and attend the private memorial in Beverly Hills, according to published reports.
Ledgers ex-girlfriend, Naomi Watts, was also among the mourners spotted in attendance at the service, according to reports.
It was not immediately clear if his ex-fiance Michelle Williams and two-year-old daughter Matilda made the trip to Los Angeles; however, they were expected to join the Ledger family in Perth for funeral services in the days ahead.
Earlier in the day Saturday, Ledger was remembered by about 1,000 guests at the GDay USA Australia Day Ball in Manhattan, where Condul-General John Olsen read a statement from Ledgers father, Kim.
Heath is and always will be an Australian, the actors father wrote.
He adored his home. His last two weeks with us over Christmas in Perth were just bliss.
Heath did not become an actor for the fame or fortune. He just loved his craft and he loved helping his friends. He loved chess and skateboarding too.
My image of Heath in New York is him with his skateboard, a canvas bag and beanie. That was Heath.
A private viewing of the actors remains was also reportedly held in New York Friday at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home.
Ledgers publicist has said there are no plans for a public memorial service for the Brokeback Mountain star, either in the U.S or Australia.
Ledger was found dead by a massage therapist in his Manhattan apartment on Tuesday. He was 28.
An initial autopsy proved inconclusive and authorities are awaiting the results of additional tests to determine the cause of death.
